What is a personal year number?
A personal year number is the numerology of a single calendar year for one person. Add your birth month and birth day to the current year, reduced the usual way, and you get a number from 1 to 9, or a master number in some systems. The years run in a nine-year cycle from 1 to 9.
A nine-year cycle
Your life path number is fixed for life. The personal year changes every year: your birth month and day stay the same, and the year moves on by one, so the number steps from 1 to 9 and starts again. A personal year 1 is read as a beginning, 9 as a closing and clearing out, and the years between as the stages of a cycle.
Florence Campbell's Your Days Are Numbered (1931), one of the most reprinted numerology manuals, made the personal year a standard part of a reading, alongside the name number and the birth number. 1
Calendar year or birthday year
Numerologists disagree on when a personal year starts. Most switch on January 1, because the number is built from the calendar year. Others start it on the birthday. The arithmetic is the same either way; only the changeover date moves.
Personal, universal, and the arithmetic of nine
The calendar year on its own, reduced, is the universal year: 2026 is 2+0+2+6 = 10, then 1, so 2026 is a universal 1 year for everyone. The personal year adds your birth month and day to it, which is why two people in the same year are usually at different points of the cycle.
Why nine? Reducing by adding digits is the same as dividing by nine and keeping the remainder, with 9 standing in for 0. Add one to the year and the reduced total goes up by one, wrapping from 9 back to 1. So a nine-year cycle is built into the arithmetic itself, whatever meaning numerologists give it; only the master numbers interrupt it.
A worked run for a November 2 birthday: 2026 gives 5, 2027 gives 6, 2028 gives 7, 2029 gives 8, 2030 gives 9, and 2031 starts again at 1.
How the machine works it out
Calculated facts only, worked out the same way the machine does it.
- Reduce the birth month, the birth day and the current calendar year to one digit each, add the three, and reduce the total.
- Example: a birthday of November 2 in 2026: month 11 (kept whole), day 2, year 2+0+2+6 = 10 → 1; 11 + 2 + 1 = 14 → 5, a personal year 5.
- Like the life path, 11, 22 and 33 are kept whole, so a personal year can also be a master number.
- The machine changes the personal year on January 1.

Common misconceptions
“The personal year predicts events.” Numerologists read it as the theme of a year, not a list of what will happen.
“A 9 year is an unlucky year.” Numerologists read 9 as completion and clearing out before the next 1, not as misfortune.
Questions people ask
When does my personal year change?
Usually on January 1; some numerologists use your birthday.
Is the personal year the same as the universal year?
No. The universal year is the current year reduced on its own (2026 is 1); the personal year adds your birthday.
How long is the cycle?
Nine years, from 1 to 9.
